I am deeply grateful to those who not only opened the archives to me at Hill-Stead, Avon Old Farms, and Westover but also gave me permission to photograph. Priscilla Pasternak and Sandra Wheeler, the Hill-Stead archivists, were especially helpful on my innumerable visits. Maria Allen shared information with me at Westover. Friends and scholars gave valuable criticism and advice without which I would never have completed this text. Foremost among them were Roy Moyer and Karl Lunde who inspired me to write this book and whose ideas have been incorporated throughout. Other readers included Helen Hall, Phyllis Massar, Aimery Dunlap Smith, and Bryce Walker.
To some extent this endeavor was a family affair. My niece Holly Smith Pedlosky lent me photographic equipment and developed some of my negatives. My nephew Nathaniel Smith encouraged me to place this text online and is responsible for its layout. And my husband Simeon Dunlap Smith had great patience as my photographer.
Finally, I appreciate being able to reproduce documents from the archives from the Ashfield Historical Society; the Avery Library, Columbia University; the New-York Historical Society; Hill-Stead; and Avon Old Farms.
