bringing exceptional community theatre to the Pioneer Valley. Presenting
primarily Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in the best productions possible
has been our goal. Join us for our 34th season!
proudly presents
Gilbert & Sullivan's
Princess Ida
or Castle Adamant
| Princess Ida opened on 5 January 1884 at the
Savoy Theatre and ran for 246 performances. It is the only
three-act Gilbert and Sullivan opera. Briefly, Prince Hilarion
had been married in babyhood to Princess Ida, daughter of King
Gama. The Princess, however, has set up a college for women
(from which all men are barred) at Castle Adamant. Hilarion and
his friends infiltrate the castle disguised as students.
Ultimately the men, led by Hilarion's father, King Hildebrand,
stage a full-scale invasion. Without giving away the ending,
suffice it to say that many people consider the traditional
ending to be musically weak, demeaning to women, and
inconsistent with Ida's character. Our current production
includes two modifications to the traditional form. We will have
two two-scene acts with one intermission; and, thanks to Glen
Gordon, we are presenting a revised, musically stronger and
somewhat more "acceptable" ending. Some G&S devotees may hate
the change, but others will love it. Come and see for
yourself! |
