What is V.92?
V.92 is the new dial-up modem specification from the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) that introduces three new features that will add convenience and performance for the modem user. The three features are quick connect, modem-on-hold and PCM Upstream.
QuickConnect shortens the time it takes to make a connection by remembering ("training") the phone line characteristics and storing them for later usage. Typically, the modem handshake (all that noise you hear) takes from 25 to 27 seconds. QuickConnect will cut the modem handshake time in half for most calls, a significant improvement.
PCM Upstream boosts the upstream data rates between the user and ISP to reduce upload times for large files and email attachments. PCM Upstream will work particularly well with new equipment such as Internet-connected digital cameras, which primarily upload rather than download information.
Modem on hold offers the ability to answer important calls while online but without disconnecting - will be available once we have all of our POPs upgraded to the V.92 standard.
The V.92 technology has been deployed for our Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, Albany, NY and Atlanta, GA numbers.
V.44 Improves upon the existing V.42bis standard by offering a larger compression ratio, allowing for faster packet flow. This means faster downloading speeds for the end user.
Our RAS equipment is V.92 capable except that most of the modems on the market are not truly capable of accessing V.92. The modems that are V.92 capable can vary from manufacturers and as a result there are conflicting issues with signaling for some boxes, just like a non USR modem calling into a USR modem bank. In order to utilize V.92 technology, you must have either a V.92 modem or a V.90 modem with updateable drivers/firmware.
All our Gears are now up and running v.92 tech. If you require driver upgrades or think you might need them then please refer to our modem drivers support page.
If you are interested in utilizing the V.92 technology, have all the appropriate modem drivers and are a current customer, we only ask that you email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for the access numbers because they may be subject to change.
If you are not a current customer and would like to use the V.92 technology, then please sign up for an account, then email us for the V.92 access numbers.
