Configuring Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11
For configuring a Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 computer for using the
Internet you will need:
- Some program to establish communication with your service provider (Valinet)
- Applications software to use the Internet. Some examples would be
Eudora, for electronic mail, and
Netscape, a World Wide Web browser. You may also want other applications, such as
FTP or other
neat stuff.
For establishing communication, ie. communications software you may download Trumpet Winsock and configure it using your Valinet account information. Or if you prefer to purchase a commercial copy of Netscape (retail approximately $40), it will come with a dialer package which will be much easier to configure and use. Of course, if you are reading this you most likely have the communications software or access to it!
The details for configuration vary widely with the various packages used. You will need to know which Valinet connection number you are using, your user name and password, and what type of modem you have and what speed it is. You will set your mail server to be mail.valinet.com and your news server to be news.isp.giganews.com.
The next steps after obtaining the communications software would be to obtain Eudora and Netscape, for example. Some people just use Netscape as it has electronic mail features, but others prefer the separate packages for a variety of reasons.
